Christian Essentials, The Bible

What does the Bible teach about… the Church?  Who is a part of the Church of Christ?

The following information is concerning what the Bible teaches about who and what the Church of Jesus Christ is, and giving definitions of words with Scripture references.

What does the word “Assembly” mean?

Assembly <1,,1577,ekklesia> from ek, “out of,” and klesis, “a calling” (kaleo, “to call”), was used among the Greeks of a body of citizens “gathered” to discuss the affairs of state, Acts 19:39. In the Sept. it is used to designate the “gathering” of Israel, summoned for any definite purpose, or a “gathering” regarded as representative of the whole nation. In Acts 7:38 it is used of Israel; in 19:32,41, of a riotous mob. It has two applications to companies of Christians, (a) to the whole company of the redeemed throughout the present era, the company of which Christ said, “I will build My Church,” Matt. 16:18, and which is further described as “the Church which is His Body,” Eph. 1:22; 5:23, (b) in the singular number (e.g., Matt. 18:17, RV marg., “congregation”), to a company consisting of professed believers, e.g., Acts 20:28; 1 Cor. 1:2; Gal. 1:13; 1 Thess. 1:1; 2 Thess. 1:1; 1 Tim. 3:5, and in the plural, with reference to churches in a district. What does the word “Body, Bodily” mean?

Body, Bodily <A-1,Noun,4983,soma> is “the body as a whole, the instrument of life”…It is also used metaphorically, of the mystic body of Christ, with reference to the whole church, e.g., Eph. 1:23; Col. 1:18,22,24; also of a local church, 1 Cor. 12:27. (Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words)

The Church of Christ is the body of believers who have put their faith in Christ Jesus as their Lord and Savior. The Church is not some special group where only certain ones can be saved or be apart of it, but it is for all who come to Christ Jesus by faith. The Bible says in John 1:12-13 to all who have believed in Jesus have become the children of God. Jesus Christ came to set mankind free from their sins, and all who come to know Him personally are set free from their sins, and become apart of the Church.
